Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV

The Outlander PHEV is the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV and will arrive on Irish shores early in 2014. It offers the best of three worlds: the environmental performance of an electric vehicle (EV), the cruising range of a conventional vehicle, and the on and off-road performance of an SUV.

The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV System fuses together the EV technologies proven on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, with the very latest engine environmental technologies, including Mitsubishi’s MIVEC variable valve timing system. Employing electrical power stored in the drive battery by charging either at home, a charging station or when the system recovers energy when decelerating, the Plug-in Hybrid EV System allows the Outlander PHEV to achieve a cruising range targeted to be in excess of 824km.

Automatic Selection of Three Drive Modes for Optimal Efficiency
Depending on driving conditions and remaining battery charge, the Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain automatically selects the optimum drive mode and fuel efficiency.

a)               EV Drive Mode
EV Drive Mode is an all-electric mode in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. With zero on-road petrol consumption and zero CO2 emissions, the driver can enjoy quiet and very eco-friendly performance in this mode.

b)               Series Hybrid Mode
In Series Hybrid Mode the petrol engine operates as a generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more powerful performance is required, such as accelerating to pass a vehicle or climbing a steep gradient such as a slope.

c)              Parallel Hybrid Mode
In Parallel Hybrid Mode the petrol engine provides most of the power, assisted by the electric motors as required. The system switches to this mode for higher-speed driving when the petrol engine operates at peak efficiency.

High-capacity Drive Battery Offers Driving Versatility
The high-capacity 12 kWh lithium-ion drive battery gives Outlander PHEV an EV Drive Mode cruising range of over 52 km, sufficient for all-electric operation in most everyday situations.

The driver can also manually switch to Battery Charge Mode whereby the petrol engine acts as a generator and charges the drive battery whether the vehicle is stationary or on the move. Battery Charge Mode gives the driver the flexibility to use the petrol engine as a generator at any time they want.

Twin Motor 4WD System Provides Superior Response
The Outlander PHEV uses a Twin Motor 4WD system comprising independent electric motors to drive the front and rear wheels. In addition to decreased friction loss, the Twin Motor 4WD delivers better response and finer control than conventional mechanical systems. It achieves this without a propeller shaft or other mechanical components seen in conventional mechanical systems. The Twin Motor 4WD system is integrated with Mitsubishi’s well-proven S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) control system to deliver high levels of stability and all-terrain performance, and ensure the vehicle behaves just as the driver intends it to.

In addition, the front and rear electric motors generate maximum torque immediately, an inherent characteristic of electric motors, giving acceleration comparable to that of a vehicle powered by a large displacement high-output ICE and allowing Outlander PHEV to deliver superior levels of environmental and driving performance.

Only very recently launched on the European market, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV will arrive in Ireland in early 2014 and pricing & equipment will be confirmed closer to launch.

These new models come on the back of an already busy year for Mitsubishi Motors in 2013 when 3 new models were introduced:

Led by the economical 5 and 7 seat Outlander from the beginning of the year, the range will start from €33,950 in 2014. All versions come with the same high levels of equipment as standard including; Bluetooth handsfree system with Voice Control, Multi-function leather steering wheel, Cruise Control, dual-zone air conditioning, a rearview camera for reversing, 7 Airbags & Alloy Wheels. And uniquely for 4WD vehicles in this class the Outlander 4WD 7-Seater version qualifies for Tax Band B resulting in an annual road tax bill of €280, a rate more commonly associated with smaller SUV’s in the Compact sector.

This was quickly followed by the compact 5-door Space Star range in February. There are two petrol engines to choose from; a 1.0L 71PS or 1.2L 80PS. Both offer excellent levels of fuel economy & CO2 emissions resulting in €180 annually for road tax and up to 4.0L for every 100kms. Pricing remains unchanged for the Space Star in 2014 so the range starts from €11,995 for the 1.0L. This is all complemented by a high level of standard specification which includes air conditioning, electric front windows and door mirrors, rear spoiler and central locking on all models. Additionally, the 1.2L Intense comes with Bluetooth, alloy wheels and a leather wrapped steering wheel

The trio of new models was completed with the launch of the face-lifted ASX Crossover in May 2013.

The ASX Crossover bridges the gap between Mitsubishi’s conventional passenger cars and its rugged off-roaders. Practicality and versatility are key to the appeal of the ASX. With a wheelbase to match the Outlander, passenger space is generous, with the flexible seating inside giving the ASX real versatility for customers looking for a practical, enjoyable family car. The addition of Cruise Control, Remote Audio Controls and a Bluetooth handsfree system that now includes the Voice Control function enhanced an already strong level of standard equipment that already included items such as Leather Steering, Alloy Wheels & Front Foglights.

Improvements to all aspects of the vehicle saw front & rear exterior design enhanced, improved economy & a revised suspension for better ride quality.
Available with a choice of Petrol or Diesel engines, the new 1.8-litre diesel engine benefits from a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy. This results in Band B2 classification for both models with annual road tax of €280.

As well as excellent levels of equipment every model in the Mitsubishi range comes with a minimum of ABS with EBD & Brake Assist, Active Stability control, Electronic traction control as well as front airbags, side airbags & curtain airbags as standard.
And since 2013, the passenger car range is backed by a market leading 8 year warranty and the Pajero, L200 and Outlander commercials with a 5 year warranty. It’s time to consider Mitsubishi Motors in 2014! You can visit them at for more information.
