10th May 2012

The National Yacht Club of Dun Laoghaire is the Mitsubishi Motors / Irish Independent Sailing Club of the Year for 2012 in celebration of an impressive level of activity both on and off the water.

Commodore Paul Barrington along with past Commodore Peter Ryan, this week received the Ship’s Wheel trophy from Billy Riordan Chief Executive of Mitsubishi Motors Ireland, at a reception in The National Yacht Club.

In winning the award for a fifth time (1981, 1985, 1993, 1996, 2012), the club has bridged a sixteen year gap since its last win and eclipsed the more than Irish 120 clubs eligible for the award.

2011 saw the energetic membership of The National YC achieve significant success on behalf of both its members and the wider sailing community. The club took on the hosting of two major international events. They provided the Irish stopover for the formidable challenge of the Figaro Single-handed Race from France, and the staging of the Topper Worlds for junior sailors.

In recognition of the club’s ability in hosting top tier events, one of its leading race officers, Jack Roy, was recruited to the 16-man Olympic Race Management Team while on the other side of the Olympic fence, Laser sailor Annalise Murphy will be a real Irish hope for a medal.

If that wasn’t enough, The National YC has continued to work tirelessly in supporting the development of a large and active junior section.

The National Yacht Club is the 33rd recipient of the award, which was devised to honour and encourage the efforts of sailing clubs and associations nationwide.
