Mitsubishi’s Pajero 4x4 has come out on top for performance, versatility and value by being chosen ahead of its rivals for a contract with the Defence Forces.
After assessing vehicles from several manufacturers, the Defence Forces concluded that the Pajero offered the best solution to the varied demands likely to be encountered. The vehicles will be used mainly in Ireland in roles where the Defence Forces provide Aid to the Civil Power. Examples of this assistance include Cash in Transit Escorts and Prisoner Escorts. They will also be used for driver training to provide a pool of competent driver personnel to operate the vehicle both at home and abroad. On overseas peace support operations the Pajero will be deployed in many roles, however primarily as a patrol and communications vehicle.
The contract, which was awarded by open tender, will see Mitsubishi Motors Ireland supply up to 320 Mitsubishi Pajeros over the next 4 years. The first 80 vehicles will be delivered to the Defence Forces in the three month period from May to July ‘09.
Commenting on the contract award, Robert Guy of Mitsubishi Motors said: "There is a lot of competition in the 4x4 market yet the Pajero is regularly being chosen for specialist fleets such as this. We are very proud to be working with the Defence Forces on such an important project. It was a very important contract for us to win and will give us great visibility on the roads."
Colonel Tom Rigney, Defence Forces Director of Transport added: “The Mitsubishi Pajero was selected after a detailed evaluation process. This vehicle has been a commercial success in Ireland for the past twenty-five years. Based on our evaluation we are satisfied that this vehicle will serve the Defence Forces well.”
